I have often been asked to recommend a suitable microphone for my bodhrans and drumskins.
I have given this matter great consideration and have collaborated with a variety of sound engineers and professional players, testing out and making direct comparisons of different microphone models and brands. After a most intensive testing-time spent in studios and at live performances, I am now very happy to recommend and offer the following microphone model for my bodhrans:

This microphone model is on offer at a very attractive price and also includes a small do-it yourself instruction booklet, a free second holding plate, and is complete with special mounting screws suitable for my rims. We can even mount the set for you free of charge if required.

In our test series, the AKG C 516 ML proved itself as the model with the best sound-brilliance and in addition, prove to be the most practical for use.
This is a goosneck model with an extended flexible neck.
The mic clips into a holder attached to the rim for solid holding even if the the microphone is unintentionally knocked aginst other objects or the instrument is knocked over. This is a major advantage when compared to other standard clip holders. The holder plate can either be attached using a doubled-sided adhesive pad which is included, or alternativels screwed on. For constant use, the screw-on method is recommended. The holding plates are also available individually making it possible to attach them to any number of additional bodhrans.
The microphone can be attached either to the outside or inside of the bodhran. Please contact me personally for more detailed advice and tips.
When ordering a new instrument with microphone, the holder can be mounted free of charge at my workshop on request.
The AKG C 516 ML model is a condensor microphone which requires phantom-power normally available with most PA mixing units, but can also be battery operated.
Likewise, this microphone is ideal for use with a wireless PA systems and icludes a mini built-in XLR connector.
For use with a normal XLR cable, an adapter is required.. We offer he original AKG MPA VL adapter for this purpose at a very reasonable price.
This adapter also comes with a bass-suppression which filters out any unpleasant heavy, low- bass frequencies such as subsonic noise etc.
Another important reason why I have chosen this product is the fact that the AKG company is based in Vienna, Austria. This naturally reduces transport costs and we are supporting the motto of 'support European production, made in Austria !'
I am 100% pleased with this mickrophone pickup system and naturally I use this model myself for both recording and live performances.

Extra holding plate for mounting on other drums, including rubber pad for noise-reduction on frame, including clamping material for 3 Euro.
Double-sided adhesive fixing pads when substituted for fixing screws for 1,50 Euro per piece.
Where phantom power is not available, we offer as an alternative to the dapter MPA VL, the 9V battery power unit AKG B 29 L for 59 Euro. With this unit, it is possible to use simultaneously a second C 516 ML model where a microphone is required at front and rear of drum.
